It might just be us, but talking about spirituality in schools can sometimes feel abstract and difficult to see the impact of. One of the reasons we introduced a dedicated Spirituality tag category in Blippit Boards this week was to make these moments easier to capture, without overlapping with existing curriculum, values, or inspection frameworks.
We have followed this key principle:
'Spirituality does not replace other tags. It works alongside them.'
Each tag category answers a different question about the same moment. Below are two simple, real-world examples that show how this works in practice.
The moment
A Year 5 teacher uploads a photo and short note from an RE lesson exploring why people pray. Children then spend a few quiet minutes writing one sentence about something they feel thankful for.
Subject tag category
This anchors you in the curriculum.
Spirituality tag category
These tags capture the inward reflection taking place. Pupils are not just learning about prayer as a concept. They are reflecting on their own feelings, gratitude, and sense of meaning.
SIAMS tag category
These tags help school leaders evidence how the school’s vision supports spiritual flourishing and how RE enables thoughtful engagement with belief.
Christian Values tag category (optional)
Used only if the school chooses to connect the moment explicitly to its values.
SMSC tag category (optional)
This might apply if pupils listened respectfully to different views during discussion. Each category plays a distinct role:
Nothing is duplicated, and teachers do not need to overthink which tag to use.
The moment
During a science lesson, children step outside to observe the sky in silence. They then write one sentence about what makes them feel curious or small when thinking about the universe.

Spirituality tag category
These tags recognise awe, wonder, and reflection, even though the lesson is not religious.
SMSC tag category
There is no RE or faith-based tagging here, and none is needed.
The spirituality tags help teachers to capture moments that matter 'internally' to children, not just academically or behaviourally.
They help answer questions such as:
Crucially, this works across church and non-faith settings.
Used together, these tags will create a fuller, clearer picture of what is happening in school. Moments can be captured in video and audio, which may, for spirituality, be better in some cases than words.
Many thanks to Saighton CE Primary School for helping to kickstart this work.
